Why I Started This Blog: 30 Years of Teaching History

Hello and welcome to Teaching History with Ganesh!

I’m Ganesh, a history educator with over 30 years of experience in Indian classrooms. This blog is the beginning of a new chapter—one where I share the lessons, insights, and reflections I’ve gathered over three decades of teaching history.

1.  A Journey Through Time and Teaching

When I first stepped into a classroom, I was armed with textbooks, chalk, and a deep love for the past. Over the years, I’ve come to realize that teaching history isn’t just about dates and events—it’s about helping students think critically, ask questions, and understand the world around them.

2. Why This Blog?

After 30 years of teaching and training teacher trainees,  I still feel the same excitement when discussing the French Revolution, the Mughal Rule, or the causes  of 1857 Uprising. But now, I want to do more. I want to:

ü Share practical strategies for teaching history

ü Reflect on what worked (and what didn’t)

ü Offer resources and ideas to fellow educators

ü Keep learning and growing—even outside the classroom

ü And for B.Ed students, how to plan and execute lessons

This blog is a space for dialogue, discovery, and dedication to the craft of teaching history.

3.  What You’ll Find Here

Each post will cover post like this:

Ø How to teach history making it a little interesting

Ø Engaging classroom activities

Ø Reflections on pedagogy and student engagement

Ø At times, linking history with what is happening at present

Ø How values and ethics could be inculcated through this subject

Ø And of course how to integrate Indian/Indegenous Knowledge Traditions/System ( IKS) in this subject.

Whether you're a new teacher, a veteran educator, or simply someone who loves history, I hope you’ll find something here that inspires you.

A New Chapter Begins

Teaching history and training teacher trainees in teaching history has been the privilege of my life. Through this blog, I hope to continue that mission.Thank you for joining me. Let’s explore the past, shape the present, and inspire the future—together.

Request to You

Please read the content critically and reflect on it. Add your views and experience on it. Donot forget to share your remarks, suggestions and view on it. This is how we will learn together and help others learn from our experiences.

What will be my first content based post in this journey?

Lets consider two questions. One: Why do people read History? Two: Why should the students be taught History? Are these two questions similar?  Do they have a common answer?

Lets explore it in my next post.
